My hotpoint fridge has just went on the blink. The light comes on when
the door opens so it's not the fuse, other than that it doesn't work
at all. It's only 3 years old so don't want to bin it and the warranty
has expired, I live in quite a rural area so would like to make a stab
a sorting it out - any ideas as to what is wrong?

If you feel comfortable doing so, you may want to carefully
remove your thermostat so you have access to the back of it.
You can either take a jumper wire, or disconnect the esisting
wires, making sure they do not fall back into the refer wall,
and either touch the two wires together, or use a jumper wire
(a piece of wire, bare on both ends) and make contact with
each end to the opposite terminals or contacts on the
thermostat.
What we are doing is bypassing the thermostat to determine if
the problem is the thermostat or not.
Once you have made connection you should hear the compressor
come on, if the problem is the thermostat. If nothing then it
could be the compressor or a start capacitor and a few other
things to check. At that point that is when I am dealing with
a tech. No choice. If you do not have the equipment and
certification you are going to get no where with parts supply
dealers. It can be contacts and as a I said a few other
things. I'd first rule out the thermosstat.
