I'm wanting to replace an old 2 way switching light system with a single one
in our front room as I've filled in one of the doors. I can't make sense of
the old light switches though - I can't even work out which is the
master.....

Switch one

Common has both yellow and red, L1 has blue

Switch two

Common has blue, L1 has red

This lot all feeds back to a junction box somewhere or other in the
floorboards which I really really don't want to try to track back to.

Other probably relevant fact is that switch one has to be upside down to
make it work as if it were the right way up, making me think blue is where
red would normally be.

Can someone tell me which wire is which? Final aim is to remove switch two
as it isn't needed - but I can't even work out which is the old master
switch.

There is no master switch. The usual system is composed of two change over
switches. The wiper(common), of one switch is connected to the live line in.
The wiper,(common), in the other switch goes to the light fitting(s). The
light fitting(s)other connection goes to the neutral. There are then two
wires interconnecting each of the two change over switches other,
(switched),connectors to each other. Thus the switch lever position could be
either up or down depending on the position of the other switch at any given
time. See:

for a diagram.
